Saturn Robot Paul wins reta award 2017

Ingolstadt, March 7, 2017: Paul, Saturn’s mobile assistant robot, was one of the recipients of the retail technology awards europe (reta) for “Best Customer Experience”. This category is used by the EHI Retail Institute to recognize retail companies for their future-oriented methods and technologies that increase customer loyalty and satisfaction. The reta europe were handed over on March 6, 2017, at the leading retail trade fair EuroShop in Düsseldorf, Germany.

Paul, the reta-winning robot, was developed by MediaMarktSaturn together with the renowned Fraunhofer Institute IPA as well as its spin-off “Unity Robotics.” Navigation, dialogic communication and mimicry were implemented in cooperation with the companies Semvox and Phoenix Design. Paul is part of Saturn’s digital innovation strategy, with which the company continues to develop its shopping experience in its stores.

Innovative success “Made in Germany”

As an innovative success “Made in Germany”, Paul won over a jury consisting of representatives from industry, universities and research institutes with his added value for customers and his practical relevance: “While still in its early days, this deployment of a customer-facing robot instore is notable for its comprehensive service capabilities based on ERP integration, context-aware speech interaction, facial recognition and VoIP connectivity, which means it can offer wayfinding, and both timely and accurate product, pricing and promotional information to customers.”

“We are very pleased to be one of reta europe’s prize winners. The award from the EHI Retail Institute confirms our claim to be a pioneer in the digitization of retail,” said Martin Wild, Chief Digital Officer of MediaMarktSaturn Retail Group, about the award. “Paul has already won the hearts of visitors to Saturn Ingolstadt – he’s not only a real eye-catcher, but also offers our customers a rare opportunity to directly interact with a robot.”

Digital Receptionist

Paul has been in use in Saturn Ingolstadt since November 2016, welcoming visitors at the store entrance as a digital receptionist. He leads customers to their desired products and can call a human colleague with Voice over IP (VoIP) to take over consultation on request. The assistance robot thus not only offers a concrete added value for customers, but also supports Saturn employees, who are relieved of routine tasks. And with great success: in his first months in the store, Paul has already traveled more than 100,000 meters and interacted with customers about 7,000 times. Paul is most frequently asked for products from the fields of Film & Music and Smartphones & Tablets, as well as TVs, washing machines and dryers.

Paul will be presented at CeBIT 2017 in Hanover

Those who would like to get to know the freshly-awarded robot personally will have the opportunity at CeBIT from March 20-24: Paul will be welcoming visitors around the Saturn partner booth at the Bitkom “hub @ CeBIT” (Hall 4, Booth C58).
