MediaMarktSaturn and Smartmile open smart parcel station

  • Using Smartmile, all customers can now quickly and easily collect parcels delivered by any courier or online shop 24 hours a day
  • The first parcel station is now up and running at the campus in Ingolstadt
  • Further services will be available in the future

Ingolstadt, 18.09.2018: Never miss a parcel again! This is the promise accompanying the new pilot project launched by MediaMarktSaturn and the startup Smartmile at the Ingolstadt campus. Smartmile’s fully automated parcel station can store parcels from any courier, allowing customers to collect them there at any time.

Special service at the MediaMarktSaturn campus in Ingolstadt. Using Smartmile, all customers can quickly and easily pick up parcels delivered by different parcel couriers and online shops in the same place – 24 hours a day!

Customers’ need for services is growing all the time, and one example is parcel stations, which are already making shopping online easier. Instead of picking up parcels from their neighbour or spending hours waiting at the post office, customers can simply collect their parcel at any time day or night from a parcel station. But with Smartmile, MediaMarktSaturn is now going one better, because this smart station doesn’t care whether a parcel has been sent using DHL, UPS, Hermes or any other courier!

“Innovations are extremely important to our business. That’s why we’re always launching pilot projects with our startups from the Retailtech Hub. This time I’m delighted that with Smartmile, for the first time we’ve been able to implement a pilot project at the campus in Ingolstadt. This project allows us to trial new technologies while having them experienced by the people of Ingolstadt,” declared Martin Wild, Chief Innovation Officer of MediaMarktSaturn.

“The system can easily be opened up to other retailers in Ingolstadt,” added Steffen Luippold, one of the managers of Smartmile. “This means that local retailers can offer their customers an additional service.”

“The growing number of parcels means more delivery traffic on inner-city roads. Approaches such as this scheme by MediaMarktSaturn and Smartmile help ensure our citizens never miss a parcel again, and also reduce the strain on the roads and the environment,” said Dr Christian Lösel, Mayor of Ingolstadt.

A parcel station that can do a whole lot more

However, this parcel station can do far more than simply store and issue parcels. In the near future, it’ll also help the adjacent MediaMarkt store further expand its range of services. It is planned for customers to be able to place a broken smartphone in the box first thing in the morning before the store opens and collect it again in full working order after 8pm that evening. After all, as well as being a simple parcel station, the box is also a fully automatic modular shelf system with an integrated payment function. There’s no limit to the ways in which the parcel station can be used! And it’s this scope which is to be tested on the pilot project over the next six to nine months.

How does Smartmile work?

First of all, customers sign up on www.smartmile.de. They receive an individual ID and the delivery address of the parcel station. This address can then be entered as the delivery address the next time they order something online. As soon as Smartmile has placed a parcel for the customer in the parcel station, they receive a PIN by text message which can be used to collect the parcel from the machine on the campus. The Smartmile parcel station is located at the junction of Wankelstrasse and Eriagstrasse in the direct vicinity of MediaMarkt. Parcels are stored for seven days, although this period can be extended in individual cases on request. In addition, returns can also be easily dealt with using the Smartmile parcel station.
