In our sustainability magazine GoGreen, we regularly report on exciting sustainability topics. Especially in the run-up to Christmas, lighting plays a big role. With our LED lights from our own brand ISY, we offer a solution that is triply sustainable.

Light bulbs don’t cost much and are distinguished by perfect colour reproduction. The snag is that they use a lot of electricity because only a fraction of the energy consumed (about 5–10%) is turned into light; the vast majority (up to 95%) is lost in the form of invisible heat radiation. Moreover, they break very quickly. On average, light bulbs only work for about 1,000 hours, meaning they need to be frequently replaced.

Therefore, the production of traditional light bulbs has largely been phased out by the EU since 2009. For a while, energy-saving bulbs were considered a better alternative. But although they’re more energy-efficient as they produce more light while consuming less power, they turned out to be chemical disaster zones containing highly toxic mercury.

LED lights are both eco-friendly and energy-efficient. True, LEDs are much more expensive than the good old light bulb, yet they pay for themselves in next to no time because of their low energy consumption. Changing to LEDs enables you to cut your energy consumption by up to 80%.

Another argument for LEDs is their much longer lifetime. Working for at least 20,000 hours, some go on shining brightly for as long as 35,000 hours or even longer. On average, we have our lights on for around 1,000 hours a year, i.e. 2.7 hours a day. Accordingly, an LED ought to last for over 20 years! In addition, LEDs are environmentally friendly – for unlike traditional bulbs, they don’t contain poisonous chemicals.

As there are so many strong arguments in favour of LEDs, it’s perhaps no surprise that at MediaMarktSaturn we’ve decided to fit all our stores with LED lighting systems by 2025. But in addition to making our stores more energy-efficient, we also want to help our customers save energy and money with modern LED technology at home and protect the environment – for instance with products from our own brands.

The main factors reviewed in this connection include (but aren’t limited to) environmental protection, health and safety at work, and any violations of the bans on child labour and forced labour. The BSCI Code of Conduct obliges us to regularly have external audits of our suppliers carried out and to work towards the continuous improvement of working conditions.
